Mahdi Gheidi

I’m an MSc student in Computer Science, specializing in AI, at the University of Freiburg, and a Scientific Research Assistant at IMBIT / BrainLinks-BrainTools, where I work with Prof. Dr. Joschka Bödecker and Dr. Shengchao Yan on the loss of plasticity in neural network architectures.

I’m broadly interested in computational neuroscience, reinforcement learning, and NLP — particularly in understanding how the brain acquires language, how that process relates to plasticity and the critical period hypothesis in neural networks, and how RL-based methods might get us closer to human-like, real-life decision making.

Before moving to Freiburg, I completed my BSc in Computer Engineering at Sharif University of Technology, where I was a research assistant in the NLP & DH Lab working on Farsi OCR, and, earlier, a remote research assistant at the Qatar Computing Research Institute (QCRI), working on transformer-based approaches to human genome sequencing.

On the industry side, I’ve worked as a software engineer at Divar and Cafe Bazaar, and I currently consult as an AI Ambassador / Senior Technical Consultant at Serity, building AI-driven workflows on ServiceNow.
